Prague State Opera House is a beautiful opera house, built and opened
in 1887-88. Opera performed here has a rich artistic tradition
and has seen performances by many leading conductors, directors
and singers. The opera house often presents performances from
the Italian repertoire: Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini
with occasional excursions into German and French opera. The
most popular performances consist of successful versions of the
operas by Mozart (The Magic Flute, Cosi fan Tutte), Verdi (La
Traviata, Nabucco, Rigoletto, The Troubadour, The Masked Ball),
Puccini (Tosca, Turandot, Madame Butterfly) & Bizet (Carmen).
Until World War II the theatre was regarded as one of the finest
German opera houses outside Germany. Immediately after the war
it changed its name to the Smetana Theatre and later again to
the State Opera. Although it is world renowned and frequented
by connoisseurs of opera, it is still well worth a visit by any
first time tourist, whether an opera lover or not. The sheer
majesty of the building itself will make the visit memorable,
and who knows, you may even take up a liking for opera and become
a regular attendee to this fine house.
